Eine is one of my favourite street artists. I’m a little peeved that he’s become so famous now. I’d liked to think that I was cool because I was in the know.
Who is Eine? I know of him from the days when letters started appearing on the doors and shutters of shops in the east end around Bethnal Green. People didn’t know where they came from but they liked them. Eventually shop owners started asking him to paint a letter on their shutters and if you walk around the east end you’ll see them everywhere like the ‘B’ on Brick Lane Kebab. You’ll even find a few words like SCARY and VANDALISM which he chose to paint because they’re used to describe graffiti and he wanted to change how the word is viewed leading to the continuous debate of whether its art of vandalism.
Yet in 2010 it all completely changed. Barack Obama was presented with an Eine original painting as an official gift form the Prime Minister. As well, Eine with the permission of shop owners (all except for one which you can spot) painted a complete A-Z on shop shutters on Middlesex Street which is now known as Alphabet Street, a living piece of art. Very cool but it makes it way too easy now, so get out there and find the originals on your own.
