Shaka Zulu is London’s largest South African restaurant which opened its doors in 2010 with a special royal blessing from the Zulu King himself. Set over a whopping 27,000 sq ft in the Stables Market in Camden, it’s a restaurant, a bar and a club serving celebs and us common folk.
When I saw a voucher on Groupon (check it out as Shaka Zulu is always on there), I grabbed the chance to take my two favourite Saffas and experience some traditional South African food. And when you walk into this place, you’re amazed and in awe. The decor is stunning as apparently the tiles were molded from statues in the British museum and the Louvre in Paris, the fabric on the seating is handmade, a wall is made entirely of shells and there’s carved wooden murals covering every inch of Shaka Zulu‘s walls. But the most impressive are the 20 foot Zulu warrior statues.
As for the food, our voucher allowed us to have 3 courses from a set menu which included biltong, steak and a creme caramel but if you’re not as cheap and adventurous looking for a true culinary experience of South Africa, you can try Crocodile, Ostrich, Springbok and Zebra.
To end it off, you’ve got to try one of their flaming drinks. I can’t remember if it was cognac or really strong rum, but with a swirl of booze, a flame and a poof of cinnamon – you’ve got a firecracker of a drink – literally. It smelt and tasted more like rocket fuel…but still, it was very impressive and ended the night perfectly.
