Now this city knows how to make bridges. I love Hammersmith Bridge even though some people think its ugly and looks like a Harrods bag. First built in 1864 for £80,000, it originally operated as a toll bridge but as cars were designed the bridge has gone through many renovations. With two failed bomb attempts in 1939 and 1996, an IRA bomb attack in 2000 caused minor damage but allowed not only for renovations but a new paint job restoring it to the original green of 1887. I say best place to sit on a bench and look out at the Thames.
