You read that right. Forget the caviar, Bubbledogs on Charlotte St. offers the unlikely coupling of hot dogs and champagne. Sink your teeth into some gourmet hot dogs and quench your thirst with some of the best bubbles in town.
I’d heard this place was popular, but had no idea that at 5:30pm there would be a queue already eager for their posh hot dogs and bubbly. With a no reservations policy, you’ve got to get there early, be really lucky, or wait it out until a table becomes available as there’s no standing in this joint as it’s small. And if you’re waiting for a friend, you can’t hold a table. Luckily, I got a spot at the bar and sat back as I had one of the hottest seats in town.
I was undecided which champagne to order, so the friendly bartender recommended the most popular which was a reasonable £6. Next was to choose my gourmet hot dog. With choices like The Horny Dog (corn dog with corny bits), KDawg (kimchi, fermented red bean paste, and lettuce) and Dogzilla (with pickled ginger, nori, wasabi mayo and bonito flake), I settled on a traditional New Yorker with sauerkraut and onions. The verdict: Mushy. I’ve had a lot better but what made me laugh is that my hot dog cost more than the champagne!
Loved Bubbledogs and would definitely go again. But next time I’ll go just for the bubbles and avoid them barking dogs.
