Walk down the stairs and disappear into the dark corners of Gordon’s Wine Bar. Share a bottle of vino in the candle lit caverns and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s one of the most romantic places in London. Perfect for a first date as even though its packed, it’s oddly intimate.

Established in 1890, Gordon’s Wine Bar is possibly the oldest wine bar in London. Still family run, signs of the bar’s long history can be found along the dusty wooden walls covered in memorabilia and old newspaper articles.

Although it can get packed by 7pm and worse on the weekends, if you watch like a hawk you can usually grab a table within fifteen minutes. Once you get that table, head to the bar and check out their extensive wine list or just ask the bartender. Grab a bottle or two, a cheese board and you’re good to sit for the next few hours while the Tube rumbles below.

Tip: As it is essentially an underground cave, it can get quite humid in the summer and watch out for the dripping ceiling!
